As part of our commitment to delivering more sustainable street furniture solutions, we have partnered with Ashwells, reclaimed tropical hardwood specialists who reclaim hardwoods such as Greenheart, Jarrah, and Keruing.
Our Fordham range is now exclusively manufactured from reclaimed hardwood timber, with more ranges to follow.
Each piece of reclaimed hardwood timber is unique, with a natural look and feel. There are very few visible differences between it and freshly made wood, however it is usually dryer and denser and may have some fastener marks / holes in it as well as fade from sunlight.
The durability of reclaimed timber makes it easy and inexpensive to maintain – regular maintenance will help to preserve the appearance and functionality of your reclaimed hardwood product for many years. Here are some tips to help you.
It’s important to regularly clean reclaimed hardwood to maintain its appearance and longevity. Use a soft-bristled brush or a broom to remove debris and dirt from the surface. Avoid using harsh chemicals or pressure washers, as they may damage the wood.
Use a gentle cleaning solution, mix warm water with mild soap, and use a soft cloth to gently rub the stained area. Rinse with clean water and dry the surface thoroughly.
Over time reclaimed hardwood may become weathered or develop minor scratches and scuff marks. Sanding can help restore the wood’s natural beauty. Use a fine-grit sandpaper to sand the surface in the direction of the wood grain.
Reclaimed timber is often more durable and stronger than new materials because it has already been exposed to the elements, making it more resistant to damage. Based on the 'Trada classification of durability', the infomation below shows the types of reclaimed timber and their durability once resawn.
Classification: Very Durable Durability: 25years+ Source: West Africa
From West Africa, Ekki is of very durable classification. Weatherability and longevity (especially in marine environments) are good characteristics of the this type of wood. It is dark reddish or violet brown in colour with light-coloured mineral deposits in the pores. Grain is interlocked, with a coarse texture and low natural luster.

Greenheart is very durable and resistant to insect attacks. It is regarded as one of the best woods for use in marine environments, and has great weathering properties. It is pale olive green in colour with darker streaks. Grain tends to be straight to interlocked, with a fine to medium grain, and good natural luster.

Jarrah is rated as very durable and resistant to decay. Colour ranges from light red or brown to darker brick red which darkens with exposure to light. Wood grains tend to be interlocked or wavy with a medium to coarse texture.
In marine applications, Opepe is sometimes used instead of oak (except when steam bending is needed). Due to its golden orange colour, borer resistance, and large available sizes, it makes a good choice for exterior applications. The grain is usually interlocked and irregular in nature. It has a uniform coarse texture and a natural luster.
