Planting the future
However, our work also means that we are directly impacting the world in a way we would prefer not to. As a business, our carbon footprint is higher than that of an individual’s, and our resource usage is much, much more than a single person would generate in a day. It is our duty as stewards of the environments we build in to ensure that every planter, bench, and bin produces net positives.
In this ongoing journey to leave the world better than we found it, we’ve partnered with Ecologi, a tree-planting non-profit that reforests the areas where some of our timber originates.
The premise is this: for every furniture item purchased by our clients, and every project completed, Ecologi will plant trees in commemoration, replacing that which we took tenfold.
Established by a team of environmentalists in Bristol in 2019, Ecologi started as a subscription service for individuals to help address the climate crisis.
What quickly became apparent is that there is a passionate, dedicated community of people around the world ready to help mitigate the worst challenges of climate change, and as a result, what started as a small project has grown into a community of over 24,000 businesses and 40,000 members.
Projects created in partnership with Ecologi go on to reforest areas devastated by logging, conserving areas of natural beauty, and funding the research and use of alternative fuels such as biogas. Every project is publicly available, allowing you to see in real time what Ecologi has done through your partnership.
Businesses who partner with Ecologi can establish their own project page on their site, which showcases the number of trees planted in the name of the business.
If you visit the Furnitubes page, for example, you can see our recently funded trees, including the 2000 new additions of rhizophora mucronata in Mozambique, just last year.
And with this partnership, and the help of our clients, we’re on the road to reducing the impact that we have had on the environment as a business.
There is a definitive link between health and the environment around us. Places of refuge in the great outdoors around us improve our lives.
Apart from the proven health benefits in reducing stress and anxiety, trees reduce carbon emissions which help the environment by naturally absorbing carbon from the air and storing it in wood, plant matter and soil. They also help to reduce the risk of flooding by slowing down heavy rain, enhancing air quality, and absorbing carbon from the atmosphere.
Almost 80% of the total deforestation is caused by agricultural production. By planting trees in places where they are cut down and the wood is used for furniture, building materials and paper, we are helping to reverse climate change and reduce deforestation – making for a healthier planet.
With Ecologi, we’ve committed to supporting key reforestation projects across Africa and South America, where every sale translates to different planted tree species across the region.
You can follow our progress by visiting our digital forest, and you can help by signing up to our newsletter or completing our NPS and CPD feedback surveys – each one is a new tree, planted in your name for a better world.
